Closing the Gap on Indigenous economic disadvantage can be addressed in some regions by supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and the ethical sale of their cultural heritage.  The economic benefit from art sales improves the well being of Indigenous communities as a whole. Self determination for Indigenous people can be achieved when programs such as Aboriginal Owned and Governed Art Centres are supported as they provide training, career development and cultural benefits way beyond income.
We have volunteered our time and gallery space for over four years teaching the stories and practices of Indigenous artists to school aged children as well as adults, and have been profoundly moved and inspired by the intimate knowledge that Indigenous people have of the environment, family systems, cultural lore and customary practices that can help to sustain healthy families and communities. Art and art practices convey this rich knowledge and wonderful way to bridge understanding and appreciation of the longest surviving continuous culture in the world!
