Di has enjoyed visiting the community art centre at Yuendumu to source new paintings for the Gallery and a range specifically for the Balmain Art and Craft Show.  Pictured here is senior artist, Alma Nungarrayi Granites, who is painting Seven Sisters Dreaming.  We enjoyed a cup of tea and a yarn when Alma took a break to stretch her legs.  Alma’s work is understandably very  popular and she exhibits regularly in Germany.  The rights to paint and the knowledge linked to the Napaljarri-warnu Jukurrpa story had been handed down to Alma  from her father, Paddy Sims, the last Japaljarri who knew all of the songs and ceremony for the Yiwarra, Milky Way Dreaming.  Alma’s mother, Bessie Sims, passed away last year.
It was extremely dusty at Yuendumu and I was amused to read this highly relevant quote in an email today:
The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off the soul
– Pablo Picasso
