Tali Gallery is pleased to present the Gamba Gamba of HopeVale in Remote Cape York having met Madge Bowen, Wanda Gibson, Grace Rosendale and Dora Deemal  recently at Joel Dicken’s curated exhibition at ‘the tate’ in Glebe (opened by Her Excellency the Governor Marie Bashir).  The artwork was the result of Joel’s residency at the HopeVale Arts and Cultural Centre, sponsored by Tim and Gina Fairfax.
The Gamba Gamba are the old ladies of HopeVale but are recognised for their distinctive, bold, contemporary styles and the wisdom of their cultural heritage. Â The artworks they create are living story lines of traditional Guugu Yimithirr Warra Culture. Stories of traditional family kinship systems, sacred sites, ancestors and totems that have been passed on through generations are now retold in their own unique, contemporary style.
These determined women have embarked on an ambitious and emotional creative journey using new materials and employing new techniques to develop and perfect their own unique and individual styles. Â They have focused on what is beautiful about life and their connection to the land and their love of nature, drawing on, and sharing the Guugu Yimithirr culture. Â Dynamic, exciting and fresh depictions of cultural heritage.
