The Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council was formed in 1980.  They encourage women to carry on culture and build esteem through their creativity and operate a Co-Op for the promotion of weaving and jewellery making.  Known as the Tjanpi Desert Weavers, the women  use desert materials such as natural grasses and feathers as well as wool and raffia and while they’re out collecting, they teach their children about country, hunt and tell stories. When they get home, they sit around the fire and create, laughing and singing.
Apart from baskets, they make people and all the animals that can be found in the bush. Â Their creations are a bright and often quirky addition to our gallery offerings, causing many visitors to smile!
We have weaving workshops at Tali Gallery with a local weaver who teaches coiling, string making and free form basketry – you are welcome to join our data base to be notified when these are on.
